Wow. Just wow. The colors yesterday were absolutely stunning. We took what I expected to be the more scenic route from Portland, Maine to Burlington, Vermont – Hwy 302 through the White Mountain National Forest – and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Not much more I can say about that. The pictures speak for themselves.
Burlington is an interesting city of around 40,000 people (largest city in Vermont). There are several great breweries here (including a few that weren’t open yesterday) and some great restaurants, but there also were indications of homelessness and other problems one usually associate with larger cities.
We visited the tasting rooms at Magic Hat (free samples!), Vermont Pub & Brewery for a snack and some beer, Switchback, and the original location of Zero Gravity (inside American Flatbread) for dinner.
It was unplanned, but we happened to be in Burlington the night of the first Democratic debate. Burlington is where Bernie Sanders was once mayor. I was a bit surprised to not see a whole lot of overt support (few signs or banners), but then again, we didn’t see signs or banners for any other candidates, either. We ended up heading back to our room to watch the debate. Though it would have been nice to have been in an area bar to watch the debate, our hotel room wasn’t very near to any.
Today I take Amy back up to Montreal so she can head home, before heading to Syracuse, New York for the night.
