Sabbatical 2015 – Around the Great Lakes

Day Four: Duluth, Minnesota

I was feeling a little under the weather yesterday, so not as much time spent walking around Duluth as I would have preferred. It was definitely quite a bit cooler than it has been, with a frost advisory announced for this morning.

I have been to Duluth before, though not since around 1999 when I was still coaching at Wayne State and we had the NSIC cross country championships here at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

I ran into a fellow Gaucho (graduate of UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Environmental Studies – the department I worked in for a few years), too! She was here taking delivery of a plane or something like that. I also met a couple from the Netherlands.

Duluth has four breweries/brewpubs (actually five, but one is only open Fridays and Saturdays), all producing quality beer: Bent Paddle, Canal Park, Carmody and Fitger’s. The owner of Carmody was there, and talked a bit about Omaha and his desire to make it there one day to see the College World Series.
