Sabbatical 2015 – Around the Great Lakes

Day Twelve: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

We got a relatively early start yesterday, since it was a fairly long drive that also included a time zone change. The drive across New Brunswick was very picturesque, with several long downhill stretches that afforded a great view of the changing colors. Prince Edward Island was a bit of a change in scenery, with fewer aspens and more pine trees and very red soil.

One of the highlights was the bridge from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island, which is over eight miles long! The toll for that bridge is $45, but… I was following the car in front of me, which exited into a little tourist trap near the toll booths. Once in there, though, it doesn’t send you back out to the toll booth area and, in fact, there’s no way to get there from that village (in the right direction, anyway). We’re not leaving via the bridge (taking the ferry, instead), so we’ll see what happens today.

Charlottetown is a relatively small town of around 35,000 and very pretty. It is evident that we’re here past the normal tourist season, though, as many of the touristy shops by the water were closed. We had dinner and drinks at The Gahan House. The food there was outstanding, as were their beers! They have a pumpkin beer that they serve in a glass where the rim has been coated with sugar and spices. Very tasty.

Once again, we found an Irish pub and had a couple pints at the Olde Dublin Pub before calling it a night.

I have vacationed in Maine several times. If you are traveling down through Portland, there are several good brewpubs including Sea Dog, Sebago, and Gritty McDuffs also the Shipyard brewery. Also, the LL Bean outlets are in Freeport. Don’t forget to stop for a Lobster roll or lobster dinner somewhere. If you are taking route 1 to Bangor, there is a good BBQ in Ellsworth called Mainely Meat.
