Sabbatical 2015 – Around the Great Lakes

Day Fifteen: Portland, Maine

The scenery today was even better than the day before! We had a pretty long drive today from St. John to Portland, though it was helped by a time change from Atlantic to Eastern. We had been a bit concerned that we might be getting here too early for the fall colors, as it was more green around St. John, but the colors in Maine were on full display. Hopefully today’s drive will be just as good.

On our way, we made two stops in New Brunswick to look around: the Sam Orr Pond Nature Trail and near the island of Saint Croix – site of the one of the first French settlements in North America in 1604.

We stopped in Bangor, Maine for lunch at the Sea Dog Brewery (great lobster bisque!), then headed into Portland. Some of the breweries we wanted to see there either weren’t open or closed early on Monday, but we did visit The Great Lost Bear (another one of Craft Beer & Brewing’s 15 beer bars you have to visit), visited Rising Tide and Sebago, and sat outdoors for dinner at Portland Lobster Company. Amy had a lobster, and I had a lobster roll. Delicious!

We once again found an Irish bar, Rí Rá, and met a rep from Shipyard Brewing who bought us each a pint of their pumpkin beer. Sláinte!
